May 2025 – 12th Scottish Adventure

Scotland
‘Ben alder 9’
day 4 of 7
Sunday, May 4

Memorial Day
at the most beautiful place ever

May 4 is the day in the Netherlands when all Dutch War Victims
since WWII are remembered.

We do this by being silent for 2 minutes starting at 8 p.m.

This is such an institution,
habit is a word that falls short,
that for someone my age
this is “in your system.

above explanation because more than
half of website visitors do so
from outside the Netherlands.

3 Munro’s this day:

Càrn Dearg (Lock Pattack) – Geal-Chàrn (Alder) – Aonach Beag (Alder)

There were 4 planned for this day, below I explain why it was 1 less.

Again, these Munro’s planned based on information from fellow Munro-Baggers on WalkHighlands

Below are the links to the day’s Munros:

Aonach Beag (Alder)

Ended up hiking past this beautiful spot multiple times (just count it on Komoot!)
.

So the first time was that conscious May 4, a little before 8 p.m. Dutch time.

It was still warm and so I didn’t need to put on a jacket.
Well the routine of a cup of tea and of course the even more conscious silence.

I know as a child I once asked my mother
if I could also think about my father at this time.
He died when I was 3 years old,
well after the war.

My mother’s answer was that you
at this time may think of anyone who
has died.

I have to think about that every year because this,
when I understood the purpose of this memorial,
a strange answer.

Meanwhile, there is much discussion about what and who
all should, should be remembered
and, in my view, she is right after all.

Above all, let us seek and name the similarities.
Not the differences!

I capture stories through video and photography.

My good friend Edwin Veer transforms them into stunning visuals.

Most Beautiful Video

Of all the beautiful trails in this beautiful country, this one is in my personal top 10!

This is on the way back to my tent with a stop at the beautiful picture earlier on this page.

Details
this day

1. Culra Bothy

More on this illustrious Bothy tomorrow but today’s route, in terms of the ascent, begins right behind this Bothy.

See map above on which unfortunately, see calibration action yesterday, the altitude is no longer indicated.

Just a quick look at the map to see where the Bothy is.

2. Beinn Èibhinn

Despite all the preparation behind the computer, practice, fortunately, is always different. I actually wanted to take this Munro today as well. Because I was not sure how the way back through the valley would go, did not want to be somewhere far from my tent at 20:00 but otherwise would have a day ‘left over’ I decided to leave this one behind. West of this area are 2 more Munro’s and I took a moment to see if it was realistic to otherwise take these as well this week but of course there must be plenty of adventures left!

3. Stick to the plan!

Main reason not to deviate from planned routes is that I simply do not have them prepared. Of course, I can create a route on Komoot or on my Garmin and hike it. Since I hike solo, I like to go over the entire route carefully using reports, the map and the route on my (big!) screen.
